What We're Reading

Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin
The "Three Cups of Tea: Young Readers Edition" tells the story of Greg Mortenson's journey to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan after a near-death experience during a climbing expedition on K2. Lost in the mountains and rescued by villagers, Mortenson promised to build a school in their remote village as repayment for their kindness. The book follows his efforts to raise funds and build the school, eventually leading to the creation of the Central Asia Institute, which has built numerous schools for both girls and boys in the region.

"An Ethic of Excellence: Building a Culture of Craftsmanship with Students" by Ron Berger advocates for a schoolwide shift in focus to a culture of excellence, emphasizing high-quality student work as the core representation of a school's purpose. The book argues that schools should not only focus on standards, curriculum, and instructional strategies, but also cultivate a strong ethic of excellence, where students and teachers strive for the best possible work. Berger's approach is practical and grounded in his experience as a teacher, offering strategies for creating a classroom and school environment that fosters a culture of excellence.
